Instructions

  1. Measurements
    1. Length of antler. This is measured along the outside edge of the beam from the base of the coronet to its extremity. The tape will pass over the shoulder that exists between the coronet and the main beam, and not pressed into the groove above the coronet.
    2. The weight of the antlers. This must be taken at least three months after the animal has been killed. If the weight has been taken full upper jaw, but without lower jaw, then one must deduct from the weight 65 to 90 grammes, depending on the size of the skull.
    3. Volume of the antlers. This is determined by immersing the antlers only in water, but not the skull or pedicles. This measurement is taken in ccm.
    4. Inside span. This is measured at the widest point between the main beams, whether it occurs at a point along their length, or at the extremities.

Very narrow span, less than 30% of average length of beam ---- 0 point
Narrow, from 30 to 34.9% of average length of beam ---- 1 point
Average, from 35 to 39.9% of average length of beam ---- 2 points
Good, from 40 to 44.9% of average length of beam ---- 3 points
Very good, from 45 to 75% of average length of beam ---- 4 points

  2. Award of Beauty Points and Penalty Points
    1. Award of Beauty Points
      1. Colour:

Pale or artificially coloured ---- 0 point
Yellow or pale brown ---- 1 point
        Light brown ---- 2 points
        Dark brown ---- 3 points
Dark to almost black 4 ---- points

      2. Pearling:

Smooth, almost without pearling ---- 0 point
        Weak pearling ---- 1 point
Average pearling (small pearling sufficiently numerous) ---- 2 points
Good pearling (small pearling on both sides of beam)---- 3 points
Very good pearling (well pearled throughout all parts of both beams) 4 points

      3. Coronets:

Feeble or weak (thin and flat) ---- 0 point
Average (in form of a girdle with small pearling) ---- 1 point
Good (in form of crown, sufficiently high) ---- 2 points
Strong (large and high) ---- 3 points
        Very strong ---- 4 points

      4. Points (tine ends):

Blunt of poorly developed ---- 0 point
Blunt and of medium development ---- 1 point
Pointed and white tipped ---- 2 points

      5. Regularity and quality: 0-5 points

Five points can be awarded for regularity and quality of tines, of which up to three points will be reserved for regularity and up to two points for their quality, characterised as follows:

Normal shaped tines ---- 0 point
Normal shaped tines ---- 0 point
        good tines ---- 1 points
Very good tines ---- 2 points

    2. Penalty Points: Up to 5 penalty points can be deducted, of which up to 3 can be deducted for various unspecified abnormalities, and up to 2 for the following tine defects:

Tines absent, or very short ---- 2 points
Mediocre tines of emanating from one beam only ---- 1 point
      Normal ---- 0 point
